Beach Is Beautiful — and a favor

Yesterday was the first day of spring and we took a drive down the eastern coast from Kanagawa to Shizuoka stopping along the way, near sunset, to take photos — I love sunsets. (Sunrises happen too early for me.) Β πŸ˜‰

In Photoshop I recently learned how to use the custom filter (filter –> other –> custom), working out how to design my own filter to add grain into my images. It’s kinda like cooking: I know there’s a ready-made filter to add grain, but it just feels more satisfying to make your own, if you know what I mean. πŸ™‚ So enjoy these pics.

I’m also posting to ask for help. As I mentioned in my last post, I’m now learning InDesign. I do want to use it to format my recipes as nifty pages you all can download with a click. But how to format? As many cookbooks as I’ve read I draw a blank every time think to sketch out a design. I was hoping you could link to, or in other ways suggest recipes whose look you liked — not the recipe itself, but how it was presented on the page. I’ve been working my way through online magazines and Pintrest to get a feel for what I like but it’s as important to learn what other people consider good design, too.

If you don’t mind, let me know in the comments. m(_ _)m

Have a Β great week, everyone! πŸ™‚

  1. I can’t help you with InDesign but I can tell you how much I like these photos. I marvel daily at the beauty of color in nature.

  2. I make puzzles for everything: Holidays, the Super Bowl, Seasons, Driver’s Ed, Crying Baby, Emotions, Family, Chores, New Jersey, Parents Anonymous Groups, Volunteers, Hobbies, Music, Kids, Positivity, Snow, Virtues and so on. So far most have been for parents but I will eventually make some simpler for kids. The ones on my blog are only for a few holidays but I am working on Getting them all up for PDF downloads Go to this link and just below the big pumpkin in the center of the post; there you can see the Word Searches and Scrambled Word Puzzles:

I also do Cryptograms as well. I wish I had more time to just work on the blog! I bought programs that do all the work. I plug the words and quotes into the programs and put them into a Word Document. I’ve only done a few Crosswords because they are more involved and take more time to make.

I e-mail three times a week to 550 people, parents and professionals. In that e-mail I write a piece that will be sent to them and attach Word Document articles on Parenting, Activities for Children and the Puzzles. I also do one-on-one support to parents AND THREE online support groups weekly.

If you ever need a Word Search, Cryptogram or Scrambled Word puzzle – here I am! I have done them for weddings, births, birthdays and such, too, all for free.

I actually send e-book lists out every month and parents e-mail me to get which ever books they want. I have a huge collection of e-books and that made me wonder if you were doing a book – real or e-book. You have a bunch of great recipes.

I should add you to one of my mailings so you can see the list.

  3. Would it be easier to create a recipe in a Word Document and then create a PDF? I make Word Searches and Scrambled Word Puzzles to download free and they turn out well. I don’t use many pictures because it takes a lot of ink to print them out; I stick to simple clip art. Just wondering… Are you working on a book? With a book you would have more options.

    • I’m just looking for a fun way to practice using InDesign and bring back some of the intent I started this blog with — that is, how to cook. πŸ™‚

Layout really is a challenge for me. Photoshop and Lightroom were pretty intuitive. I think most of us think in images, so it’s pretty easy to figure out what to do. I can not intuit design, yet. Maybe if I keep consuming Pintrest pages it’ll come. πŸ™‚

What are those puzzles you’ve been making for, Jackie?
